First Grade News Mrs. Loomis’s Class June 5th – 9th, 2017
To Start: *The class trip to The Beardsley Zoo last Wednesday was wonderful! Students enjoyed seeing many of the animals they have been studying. The weather was mostly cooperative, and the children learned so much. A big “thank you” to our chaperones who had to juggle their schedules to accommodate the date change for the trip. An excellent time was had by all.
Reading News: In phonics, students will work on brainstorming all the words they can think of that start with “dr, br and fr”. Students often confuse words that start with the letter “j” with words that start with “dr”. The sounds are very similar. We will work on this throughout the week. Students’ reading progress continues to be amazing. Every child has made great strides in both application of phonics skills and comprehension strategies. Students will continue to work on additional phonics and comprehension skills throughout the month of June.
Writing News: Students continue to enjoy writing about the fictional characters that they have developed! This week they are working on the third story in their series of books based on the character they created. The children are doing a great job adding details and descriptions to the adventures of their characters.
Math News: In math, students are working on a new unit about numbers to 100. Within this unit they are learning to order numbers from least to greatest, greatest to least, compare, order and complete number patterns and revisit place value with larger numbers.
Content: In science students are learning about the characteristics of plants. They will learn about transplanting and starting plants from seeds. They will learn about the unique habits of plants as they grow in various environments.
Looking Ahead: *Please remember to send your child’s empty work envelope back to school on the first day of each week or the day after it is sent home. *Please launder and return your child’s Barkhamsted t-shirt as soon as possible after the field trip. They are needed by students in other classes. *Field day will be on Monday, June 19th. Please be sure your child wears appropriate clothing. If it is a hot, sunny day, a hat could be very helpful. If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please be sure to apply it at home before sending your child to school. *Thursday, June 22nd will be the last day of school. We will have a 1:00 pm dismissal. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!
